The Best of Deià + Valldemossa 2024

You can make it to both villages on the same day, and most restaurants are actually open on both Saturdays and Sundays (with some weekday closures), which is something to consider when planning.

The roads to get to Valldemossa, and especially to Deià, can be very windy, steep and narrow. You need to be careful to watch out for both oncoming traffic and cyclists. It is a drive with many gorgeous panoramas, this is true - but it can also feel like a bit of a stressful one, and parking is limited.

The driving conditions make this day trip a good choice for transit, if you didn’t rent a car. Plus, it’s easy to get to both towns via one direct transit line, TIB bus 203, which departs from the Palma Estació Intermodal; the bus ride up to Deià, with a stop along the way in Valldemossa, takes about an hour, whereas the drive up is about 45 minutes. The last direct bus from Deià to Palma leaves around 9pm, and runs on the hour every hour or so up until then; plan for an earlier dinner up there, if you take transit. Taxi service is not consistently frequent, so keep that in mind.

Deià

Deià has always been a favorite of artists, writers, and musicians, and the bohemian vibes remain. It is a magical place, and a gorgeous part of a landscape that has been awarded World Heritage Site status.

With stone-house buildings that are built into the hillside, it is beyond picturesque. Take a stroll around the village, which feels more luxe than Valldemossa, although don’t expect to be able to wander around for as long as it is easy to do in Valldemossa.

Open 9:30am to early evening (check times before you go)

🌞🇪🇸💍🎁🪡🍴☕️

De Moniö combines café with local artisan shop, and is somewhere you absolutely need to pop into. The white stone-walled interior exudes warmth and charm (even the bathroom is charming). The shop sells handcrafted jewelry (made by one of the super friendly owners), glassware and ceramics, along with a few other crafts. The perfect place to pick up a memento.

The excellent vegan menu offers fresh sandwiches, small plates, pastries, plus coffees and fresh pressed juices. Come here for breakfast or lunch, and also check out the selection of carefully chosen local wines and vermut to take back to your hotel (or home) with you.

🌞🌛🇹🇭🇻🇳🌱🌶️🍴🍹🍷🏞️

If you like Southeast Asian cuisine and a stunning view of a terraced mountainside, make a reservation on the Restaurant Nama patio. A pastel-hued patio with light features that sway in the breeze, the design is serene and lovely.

This is where I usually take people for their first time to Deià (especially if we have already eaten a fair bit of Mediterranean food). They also have vegan alternatives for some of their menu items. Try an order of the dumplings, spring rolls, lamb buns, and the tartar to share, along with a main dish or two; get the thai mango sticky rice for dessert.

Please note that for dinner, they have a minimum €50 spend per person.

You will need a car to get to the Hotel Sa Pedrissa, as it is a drive from central Deià.

In addition to clothes from the Datura collections, you will find a hand-picked selection of accessories, ceramics, and magazines in store (like Spanish brands @hereu_ + @lacobalta). Plus, they sometimes host pop-ups in their studio, which is always fun.

Datura's conscious ethos promotes slow fashion through a tightly controlled manufacturing process, in which materials and processes matter.

The incredible La Residencia hotel property is a dream. You can take a bit of a stroll around the property to admire the buildings and landscaping, and you can also dine here. The restaurants boast unparalleled views of the village.

For a romantic and elegant fine-dining experience of traditional Mediterranean and Mallorcan dishes. On the pricier side, count the ambience to be part of the value here (and do sit on the terrace). The menu sources vegetables from the hotel’s own lush garden.

Make a reservation, as this restaurant tends to book up early,

Just above El Olivo is Tramuntana Grill (which has just as nice of a romantic view), and offers both lunch and dinner.

With a casual Mediterranean lunch, the dinner menu is more relaxed as well, with market fresh fish, local meats and Sóller prawns (and as the name suggests, some grilled items from their wood-fired Josper oven).

Patio seating is ideal here as well.

Valldemossa:

The best thing to do in Valldemossa is to simply wander around. With its quaint stone houses, cobblestone streets, and flower-filled alleyways, it is one of the prettiest and most walkable medieval villages.

It’s easy to spend a few hours pleasantly wandering around. There are historic buildings you can visit, but I prefer just taking the town in.

🌞🌛🇪🇸🇯🇵🇵🇪🍴🍷

Opened in the spring of 2024 is the sister restaurant to Palma’s de tokio a lima. This is a hugely welcome addition to the Valldemossa food scene, which has yet to bloom the same way as it has in other towns.

Their colorful dishes showcase flavors inspired by the Mediterranean, Japan, and Peru, which makes it a wonderful place to share a bunch of plates. Their romantic outdoor patio has a pretty incredible view of the Tramuntana mountains.

What to order: shrimp fritters, tuna tartar, roasted octopus; What else to consider: the mango and avocado salad, beef sirloin tataki, Sóller lemon pie

between Sóller and Deià / Valldemossa

Restaurant open to everyone: Breakfast 8:30am - 11am; Lunch 12:30pm - 4pm; Dinner 6:30pm - 10pm; open every day until November 2, 2024

🌞🌛🍴🇪🇸🧑‍🌾🌸☕️🍹🍷✨✨✨

Hotel Corazón is the hotel I would stay at, if traveling to Mallorca. A renovated historic finca, their 15 rooms are sublime in their soft luxury: a pastel palette with pops of colour or texture through perfectly curated art and tapestry, rounded edges, draped textiles; each room is an ode to Mallorca’s natural materials and artisans. The property is a blend of wild splendor, which feels synonymous with the spirit of Mallorca. There are also no TVs here; take in the view instead, or go for a dip in the pool.

Nestled between Sóller and Deià / Valldemossa, it’s a bit more out of the way, but that’s exactly what you need for a relaxing vacation. Especially if it is your second or third time visiting the island, and you are looking for a stay at the hotel and rejuvenate type of holiday. This is a destination I would recommend having a rental car for, as this will be the only way to easily access the rest of the island from here.

Lucky for everyone, their restaurant is open to the public. Dining is al fresco, with views of the mountains. The menu is inspired by the hotel garden, which uses regenerative farm techniques to grow their own vegetables, flowers, and herbs. This is a special destination worthy of a visit.

They also offer workshops and yoga classes, and host pop-up shops and outdoor cinema evenings in collaboration with Cinema Paradiso.
